Dr. Andrew Alvarez and his team at Rothman Orthopedics are the best. Dr Alvarez is an orthopedic surgeon of the spine and I find him to be personable, down to earth and will always give you a straight answer. He isn’t “surgery happy” like a lot of other doctors.

My review of Dr. Alvarez is geared more toward Rothman Orthopedics and their staff. I had severe pain that prevented me from walking and sleeping. First, I needed an MRI, which needed a peer-to-peer review for insurance. I had to reschedule the MRI 5 times before the doctor was able to do the peer-to-peer review. 2nd, the doctor recommended that I get an epidural shot for the pain. I was told that I needed to pay $1,100 for a physician fee and another $790 for a facility fee. I had to pay or I could not proceed with the procedure. I called the Rothman Financial Counseling center which informed me that I could only be charged $690 for the total cost, then I called my insurance, which informed me that for the procedure code under that physician would only cost me $50 physician fee, and a small fee for the facility, but both of these would be billed through my insurance so that I could proceed with the procedure. Rothman denied the ability to do this, then asked me to go to an outside facility to have the procedure done. The outside facility gave me up-front pricing and was able to bill me through my insurance. I decided that if Rothman was going to behave in this malicious manner, that I'd rather have another physician who was not under the Rothman name care for me. I feel like because I was in horrible pain they felt they could take advantage of me and wanted to bill me for the full price of services knowing that if it went through my insurance, they would negotiate the fees down. For the most part, Dr. Alvarez was knowledgeable and I don't have anything negative or positive to say about him. I don't know how much he even knows about these issues happening, but I feel he would be unhappy about it. I hope that he takes some interest in how his patients are treated by the clerical staff.
